Seat shell: dyed-through polypropylene. All models are available with a seat cushion (screwed to the seat shell) or full upholstery. The fully upholstered version has moulded polyurethane foam padding covered in Hopsak fabric, attached to the shell with a welted edge. Covers available in all Hopsak fabric colours. Different shell and upholstery colours and various bases provide a multitude of possible combinations.
Note: special additives retard the fading of colours due to UV radiation. However, if the chair is exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods, the colour may change over time. We recommend limited exposure to sunlight.
Options: the Eames Plastic Side Chair is available with bases for use as a visitor, dining or swivel chair or in a stacking version with ganging brackets for row seating. Beam-mounted shells are suited for use in waiting areas.
The Eames Plastic Chairs are renewed versions of the legendary Fiberglass Chairs. The original, which was the very first industrially produced plastic chair, was jointly developed with Zenith Plastics for the ‘Low-Cost Furniture Design’ competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art. In the current version made of polypropylene, these chairs provide even greater comfort.
With its simple organic shape, the Plastic Side Chair now seems like an archetype of the genre of chairs whose shell can be combined with diverse bases. The selection of bases makes it possible to use the chairs in a wide variety of settings: from the dining room or home office to the garden. Shells come in a broad range of colours and upholstery versions, so that components can be mixed and matched to find the perfect chair for individual needs.
The Eames Plastic Side Chair is complemented by the Eames Plastic Armchair with integrated armrests.
