Public Spaces

Public spaces today include not only waiting rooms and open lounges, but also semi-public zones such as reception areas and company lobbies, conference rooms, restaurant interiors, cafeterias, libraries, shops etc.

A further characteristic of public spaces is that their furnishings are subject to heedless use, if not abuse. To meet the demands of public use, the Vitra product line includes correspondingly robust and durable products. In addition and parallel, Vitra does not allow any compromise on the aesthetic quality of a design for the sake of robustness. Vitra's objective for furnishing public spaces is to avoid visual overstimulation among users through the use of familiar, classic products and new designs with a reserved appearance.

Airport Chairs

The interplay of aesthetic value and robust longevity is the key to Vitra's ability to furnish public spaces with long-lasting quality. This is observed for example in the many airports equipped with Eames Tandem Seating, a design by Charles & Ray Eames from 1962. It is further evident from our recent collaboration with Norman Foster - who is renowned among other accomplishments for the design of several new international airports - on the development of AIRLINE, a seating system for waiting areas.
