Is there a profession of artist plumbers? Maybe only in Japan. Think of all the wash basins you have ever seen and consider if the plumbing was ever done as beautifully as this?
The ‘U bend’ is a requirement of every installation, providing an air-block between the basin and the drainage system below ground, and usually it’s a separate unit which hangs from the underside of the water outlet with a connection to the pipework at the back which allows the pipe to disappear into the wall horizontally.
That might be preferable for cleaning the floor, but has there ever been a more poetic expression of the function than this one, which lets you know exactly where the water’s going?
