Since being founded in 1989, the Vitra Design Museum has grown to become one of the world’s most highly recognized cultural institutions for research on and the popularization of design and architecture.
A foundation funded by Vitra yet independent of it curates shows, stages workshops and releases publications on the topics of design and architecture. The shows are featured in international institutions and museums around the globe.
The Centre International de Recherche et d’Education Culturelle et Agricole (C.I.R.E.C.A.) conducts interdisciplinary workshops in the summer in collaboration with the Vitra Design Museum and the Centre Georges Pompidou.
The participants work and live for a week with leading international architects, designers and artists at Domaine de Boisbuchet, an idyllic country estate in southwest France. The purpose of the courses is to give participants insights into design processes and the associated challenges of rational thought, imagination and manual skills.
The Vitra Design Museum maintains one of the world's most extensive collections of modern furniture design from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present.
Special areas of the collection include early-industrial bentwood furniture, designs by Viennese architects at the turn of the century, Gerrit Rietveld's experiments, tubular steel furniture from the 1920s and '30s, the evolution of design in America, key objects of Scandinavian and Italian design and contemporary developments.
