The many advantages and disadvantages of distributed work have been studied and written about extensively over the past 15 months. The physical act of going back to the workplace will become a conscious choice for many. One that is guided by the tasks that lie ahead, the required level of interaction and the need for direct access to human and physical resources. The physical workspaces that we now build should complement the home office and provide added value for both the company and users. In this session, we will open the doors of the Club Office. Built over the last months at our head office in Basel, Switzerland, it was created by Vitra as a response to the need for post-pandemic workspaces.

Joyn, Vitra (R. & E. Bouroullec), 2002For centuries people have been getting up, joining a daily commute or retreating to a space, to work. The office has become inseparable from work. Looking back at the past 170 years, allows us to see how places of work respond to cultural, technological and social forces. The history of the office also serves as a roadmap to its future. A look at the timeline shows that challenges tend to repeat themselves and new solutions can build up on learnings from old solutions. While broader remote working has been enabled by technology and predicted at the turn of the century, the past seventeen months have served as an accelerator forcing a change upon the office that is far more radical than the evolution it had to undergo over the past 170 years.
How does the shift towards a distributed working model set in motion by the outbreak of the pandemic impact businesses and organisations in the mid to long term? This was the central question we explored during the Vitra Session on ‘Distributed Work’ that took place on 11 March. With contributions by designers, thought-leaders and industry experts, the event proved to be highly successful and managed to set a lively tone for the sessions to follow. For more in-depth analyses and insights on the theme of ‘Distributed Work’, be sure to download the latest issue of our e-paper, which includes in-depth essays, inspiring interviews with thought and business leaders, scientific findings, helpful spatial solutions and much more inspiring content.
For some time now communication technologies have been blurring the line between life and work. Even before we had to migrate to our homes en masse, many of us were spending large parts of our working lives in places other than our offices. While operating from home might seem less rigid, in fact, without your daily commute or lunchtime outing, you might find yourself sitting in one place for longer than ever – and as everyone knows, sitting still for extended periods is a major health risk. Therefore, finding the right task chair, one that promotes the optimum dynamic sitting position, is essential.
As we approach a new reality with far-reaching consequences for the home, the office and the spaces we share, how do we keep track of the key topics and most impactful processes? Our free, downloadable e-papers, newspapers and brochures feature inspiring and thought-provoking content by a host of well-known designers, thought leaders, scientists and industry experts that will help you stay on top of the latest trends and developments.
