Never have our homes been subject to more changes than over the past months. Any societal shift requires a response from the world of design. What can we learn from the past? What have we learned from the remote working experiment of 2020? As designers, architects and manufacturers, our challenge is to maximise the use of limited space, while generating a sense of safety and well-being and making room for more individual choices as we design, shape and build the dynamic home of tomorrow. Featuring insights by international speaker & author Oona Horx-Strathern, psychotherapist & author Esther Perell, happiness consultant & company founder Samantha Clarke as well as planning examples, our latest e-paper looks at implications of the developments of the past year on individuals, how we live in our homes and how we might use our domestic spaces in future.

A good home office provides us with the physical and mental space for a productive day and allows us to disconnect from work just as easily. Till Weber, Vitra’s Creative Director of Scenography, presents spacial solutions for home offices that do just that.

The Vitra Colour & Material Library comprises a variety of textiles and leathers, but also features solid materials, including the colours and textures of plastics, metals, woods and other materials. Together, these form a system offering countless possible combinations with a coherence that make it easy for architects, interior designers or private clients to define a lively interior collage with a strong identity.

Originally conceived as a showroom for the Vitra Home Collection, the VitraHaus exemplifies the diversity of the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein. The striking building designed by Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron is simultaneously an experimental laboratory and flagship store for the Swiss furniture manufacturer. The VitraHaus has been visited to date by 3.5 million people from all over the world. On the occasion of the building’s tenth anniversary, Vitra is encapsulating the accumulated experiences and insights of the last decade in a new interior.

In 2006 the architects Herzog & de Meuron were commissioned to design a space for the Home Collection, which had been launched two years earlier. The concept of the building plays with archetypal proportions and dimensions to create living scenarios and work settings with a home-like feel. Since its opening in 2010, the VitraHaus has welcomed more than 3.5 million visitors.

Fictional inhabitants and characters
Over the past years, well-known interior designers such as Ilse Crawford, India Mahdavi and Raw Edges have developed interiors for fictional residents in the VitraHaus loft on the top floor. To mark the building’s ten-year anniversary, the US design studio Charlap Hyman & Herrero has now transformed the loft into the apartment of a film director. But other parts of the VitraHaus also showcase living areas furnished in different ways, inspired by the lives of imaginary occupants. A visit to the VitraHaus should encourage visitors to think about and experiment with their own home interiors, while also demonstrating Vitra’s conviction that designing living spaces is always a deeply personal process.

Invest in an original, for it will always retain its worth. An imitation will never be anything but a copy, a stolen idea. Appreciate the differences – not just the quality and more obvious variances but also the sensory and emotional appeal of the authentic product.
