Oakland International Airport

Oakland International Airport located to the east of San Francisco operates two terminals with a total of 28 gates. Passengers access 16 of these gates via Terminal 1, which was built in 1962. The facility's low ceilings and dark, confined seating gave the space a cramped and overcrowded feel.

The terminal was refurnished in 2023 with the modular waiting zone systems Meda Gate and Soft Wait from Vitra amidst ongoing flight operations. The bright and colorful seating elements are more generously spaced and coordinated with passenger flow patterns, giving the terminal a fresh, sleek look.

Meda Gate designed by Alberto Meda and Soft Wait by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby both adhere to the idea that public spaces and their furnishings have an impact on user well-being.
