Furnishing one's home is about creating a warm and comfortable retreat. But a good interior also needs to come with the ability to constantly adapt itself to the needs of its inhabitants and their guests by creating inviting and stimulating environments. We believe that such environments are best shaped by the principle of the collage – the idea that a vibrant living space gains character through a mix of old and new, high and low, classic and contemporary. This season, we invite you to dive into the world of the French designer and architect, Jean Prouvé, to rediscover our design classics and explore the most iconic contemporary pieces for living, dining and lounging.
Comfort, softness, and an inviting appearance – these are the classic characteristics of a lounge chair. But to be truly great, a chair must offer more than just the standard elements. At Vitra we’ve combined engineering expertise with a deep knowledge of upholstery, colours and materials to offer you the perfect lounge chair, equally suited as a special standalone piece or as an attractive addition to your existing living room furnishings.
In 1934 Jean Prouvé introduced the first model of his Standard chair, which he named Chair No. 4 in reference to the three prototypes that preceded it. Deceptively simple in appearance, the Standard chair was the outcome of years of experimentation and effort. The genius of Jean Prouvé’s designs lies in its focus on function and its bold, stripped-back execution. At Vitra we regard Prouvé as one of the greatest ‘constructeurs’ of the twentieth century. Based on extensive analysis of the historical models in the collection of the Vitra Design Museum, our contemporary re-editions are developed with respect for Prouvé’s original vision, down to the smallest of details.
The legendary designers and architects Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen created the Organic Chair in 1940 as part of their entry for 'Organic Design in Home Furnishings. Perfectly suited for reading, the Organic Chair will bring new levels of comfort and understated elegance into your home.Discover the chair at your closest Vitra store and on vitra.com.
The work of the French designer and architect Jean Prouvé encompasses a wide range of objects, from a letter opener to door and window fittings, to lighting and furniture. We put the light on two new accessories by French architect and designer, Jean Prouvé – Lampe de Bureau, a small table lamp, constructed from bent steel that projects a soft light and the minimalist Petite Potence wall lamp. With its reductive aesthetic, Petite Potence is an ideal lighting choice for a wide variety of settings, from dining and living rooms to the kitchen or bedroom.
