Herringbone Pillows

Raw-Edges, 2019

The Herringbone Pillows exude a cheerful freshness thanks to a use of clear colours and captivating patterns, which have a distinctly geometric look despite their handcrafted origins. The intersecting and overlapping bands of varying colour intensity were achieved through multiple immersions in different coloured dyes, with the final result serving as an exact template for the printed pattern of the Herringbone Pillows.

Herringbone Collection

Created by Raw-Edges, the Herringbone Collection emerged from the studio's interest in the technique of immersion dyeing. The transformations of different materials and shapes when parts of them are dipped in a dye bath exert an almost magical fascination on the design duo Shay Alkalay and Yael Mer. In 2018, Raw-Edges conceived the furnishings and layout for an entire floor of the VitraHaus on the Vitra Campus. For this project, they developed a series of pillows and small, tree-like wooden objects with patterns based on the immersion dyeing technique. These pieces met with great interest, which led to the decision to further refine the designs for mass production. The resulting Herringbone Collection consists of the Herringbone Pillows and the Herringbone Vessels. The colour scheme and sharpness of the pattern contours vary depending on the respective material.
