In 1934 Jean Prouvé introduced the first model of his Standard chair, which he named Chair No. 4 in reference to the three prototypes that preceded it. Deceptively simple in appearance, the Standard chair was the outcome of years of experimentation and effort. The genius of Jean Prouvé’s designs lies in its focus on function and its bold, stripped-back execution. At Vitra we regard Prouvé as one of the greatest ‘constructeurs’ of the twentieth century. Based on extensive analysis of the historical models in the collection of the Vitra Design Museum, our contemporary re-editions are developed with respect for Prouvé’s original vision, down to the smallest of details.
