KURSI Design Challenge

Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation & Vitra ‘Chair of the Future’ Challenge

KURSI – meaning ‘chair’ in Arabic – is the title of a 6 week design challenge set by The Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) and Vitra, which tasks the DIDI students and faculty with designing ‘ a chair for the future’, to explore alternative approaches to chair design.

The challenge asks the students and faculty to take inspiration from the design process of the Panton Chair designed by Verner Panton which celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. Designed in the early 1950’s the first all plastic cantilever chair took almost thirty years after the initial market launch, to finally reach one of Panton’s key goals – to produce this plastic chair as an affordable industrial product.

KURSI culminates in an exhibition during Dubai Design Week showcasing both the design submissions as well as Vitra’s Limited Edition Panton CHROME and GLOW – developed by Vitra specially to mark the 50th Anniversary of the iconic design classic.

Opened September 2018, this six-week design challenge will be the DIDI students’ first live project, showcasing what the future of chair design could look like for Generation Z - the networked generation, and incorporating key design drivers, such as sustainability, user experience and innovation.
