Bolwerk
's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands

The year 1582 saw the completion of the trapezoidal fortifications on the River Dommel in 's-Hertogenbosch that defended the city's western gate. After centuries of decay, reconstruction of the bulwark began in 2013 and a new building was added. This is home to Restaurant Bolwerk, run by the international hospitality chain owned by the Van der Valk family.
The restaurant owner wanted classic bistro-style chairs that contrasted with the flat building design and its rusty steel façade. The Belleville Chair by Vitra proved the perfect choice – and with its high-tech construction, the plastic chair also forges a link to the new modern building, both indoors and out.
