Construction City
Oslo, Norway

Construction City brings together several companies from the construction and real estate sectors at a single location. A primary objective of the project was the responsible use of resources, with particular focus on reusing furniture. Nearly 90 percent were sourced from existing stock rather than buying new. Construction City in Norway has therefore taken on a pioneering role among large-scale workplace projects with a high proportion of reused elements.

The planning process placed considerable demands on the procurement of large quantities of identical furniture and on coordinating the partners involved, while also maximising the reuse of existing pieces. As Vitra is able to supply refurbished products in large volumes and offer them with a new warranty, the Swiss manufacturer was naturally chosen to supply a substantial proportion of the interior furnishings.
Vitra was responsible for outfitting the conference rooms, cafeteria, workspaces and informal areas of the 3800-workstation office environment. This landscape promotes interaction and offers facilities for a variety of usage scenarios such as focused work, training sessions, informal meetings and more. Featured Vitra products included Softshell Chairs by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Aluminium Chairs and Segmented Tables by Charles and Ray Eames, ID Soft office chairs by Antonio Citterio and various pieces by Jean Prouvé. Vitra’s “Circle for Contract” portal proved an invaluable tool for collaboration between planning teams and implementation partners throughout the project.
