The Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University Villingen-Schwenningen (DHBW VS) is a public university that combines academic study with practical phases in the fields of business and social work. As part of the ongoing development of the campus, two large spaces were transformed into a contemporary learning environment. The aim was to create two workshop zones within an area of around 210 m2, suitable for both traditional teaching situations and collaborative, project-based work.

Planning was entrusted to the Vitra Consulting & Planning Studio, whose conceptual strength – together with the functional and aesthetic quality of its durable products – was a key factor in selecting Vitra for the project.
“Spaces should not only reflect teaching, but also actively enable it.”
Prof. Dr. iur. Rahel Gugel, Professor of Law in Social Work, Programme Director Youth and Family Welfare Services.
The result is two freely configurable spaces with an open design that permit a wide range of usage scenarios. The furnishings are conceived for flexibility: mobile, space-saving elements such as Scout and Reset allow quick reconfiguration for lectures, group work, presentations, workshops, exams etc. In addition, Dancing Wall 2 can be used to temporarily structure the interior without restricting its openness.

A traditional lecture hall and a conference and seminar room were consequently transformed into two versatile, adaptable spaces, supporting new teaching and learning formats for a variety of scenarios.
