The Tane Garden House was designed by the Paris-based Japanese architect Tsuyoshi Tane and will be constructed using sustainable and, wherever possible, locally sourced materials and built by local craftsmen. The house is very compact and can accommodate around 8 people. In addition to a small coffee corner, all the gardening tools are to be kept in the house. There is also a toilet with a sink for use exclusively by the volunteers. The house is also suitable as a meeting room and for workshops on the topic of gardens. A kitchen garden is being created alongside the building and will be accessible to Vitra employees. The Tane Garden House is intended for use by the kitchen garden enthusiasts and the crew of the Oudolf Garten. Outside, there is seating and a small fountain for watering or cleaning boots and utensils. The building will have a viewing platform from which visitors can enjoy new perspectives of the Oudolf Garten, the Umbrella House and the rest of the Vitra Campus.

With the Audi skysphere concept, AUDI has unveiled the first member of a new family of concept vehicles, a spectacular roadster. AUDI skysphere concept is the name of the electric-powered, two-door convertible whose lines lead directly to the AUDI design of tomorrow. With it, the brand is illustrating it’s vision for the progressive luxury segment of the future, in which the interior becomes an interactive space and the vehicle a platform for captivating experiences. This is being made possible thanks to autonomous driving, a revolutionary redesign of the interior, and a seamless digital ecosystem.

When it comes to the three concept cars Audi skysphere, Audi grandsphere, and Audi urbansphere, AUDI is placing the space that surrounds the passenger (“sphere”) and which becomes an experience for them – the interior – at the center of its designs. This is because all three vehicles are designed for level 4 autonomous driving – meaning that in certain defined road and traffic situations, the driver can delegate complete responsibility to the car and no longer has to intervene.

The VitraHaus undergoes regular updates, frequently offering a new experience to returning visitors. In spring 2023, two areas have been refitted on the first and second floor of the VitraHaus.

An exhibition by the Vitra Design Museum, the Wüstenrot Foundation, and the Nieuwe Instituut

Gardens reflect identities, dreams, and visions. Deeply rooted in their culture, they can unfold immense symbolic potential. The recent revival of horticulture has focused less on the garden as a romantic refuge than as a place where concepts of social justice, biodiversity, and sustainability can be tried and tested. Gardens have become places of the avantgarde. Designed by the Italian studio Formafantasma, the exhibition »Garden Futures« at the Vitra Design Museum is the first to explore the history and future of modern gardens. Where do today’s garden ideals come from? Will gardens help us achieve a liveable future for everyone? The exhibition addresses these questions using a broad range of examples from design, everyday culture, and landscape architecture – from deckchairs to vertical urban farms, from contemporary community gardens to living buildings to gardens by designers and artists including Roberto Burle Marx, Mien Ruys, and Derek Jarman.

The exhibition Hackability of the Stool, developed by Japanese architect Daisuke Motogi / DDAA Lab, showcases 100 ideas for altering Artek’s Stool 60 inside the Buckminster Fuller Dome on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein during Art Basel, 12-18th June 2023.

Motogi and his creative lab DDAA initiated the project Hackability of the Stool back in 2019, when commissioned to create a space for Mistletoe, a community for collective impact initiatives. Inviting members of the community to discuss what a stool actually is, Motogi consolidated the suggestions into the idea of a multifunctional stool. Instead of designing a new product, DDAA Lab opted for adding the requested functions to an already existing stool: Artek’s Stool 60, defined as a masterpiece of modernist design.

Developing numerous ideas on how to modify the Artek stool, Motogi first presented the results in 2020 as an online exhibition on his Instagram account. Originally over 400 ideas were boiled down to 100 modifications, which Motogi and his team developed by manually altering, or hacking, the Stool 60.
After first presentations in China, Japan and Italy, Hackability of the Stool now descends onto the Vitra Campus.

Eames Fiberglass Armchair with Steinberg Cat – Limited Edition

Launched in 1950, the Eames Shell Chairs were the world's first industrially mass-produced chairs with the seat and backrest formed from a single plastic shell. Saul Steinberg, who had already made a name for himself with his humorous and occasionally provocative painted illustrations of people and animals, was a good friend of Charles and Ray Eames. During his visit to the Eames Office in Los Angeles, Steinberg picked up a paintbrush and drew a number of lively cartoons – on furniture, floors and walls of the studio. A small, imaginative cosmos of personalities and animals took shape within the Eames Office premises. One of the painted figures was a sleeping cat.

Our world is full of colour. Its various shades unleash emotions, assist orientation, indicate functions or perils, and mark cultural, political, professional, or religious identities. Colours have always played a central role in the design of interiors, fashions, and public spaces. Up to May 2024, the presentation at the Vitra Schaudepot is wholly devoted to colour. Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis has transformed the Schaudepot in one simple, sweeping gesture by sorting its roughly four hundred exhibits by colour. Her installation shows the collection from new perspectives and yields fascinating cross references between periods and styles. The presentation is complemented by historical and contemporary objects and documents from the museum archives that illustrate the importance of colour in design.
