A Studio Visit with Raw-Edges

The Israeli design duo Raw-Edges has revamped the interior of the VitraHaus loft. For their installation, Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay put together a colourful mix of living areas and workspaces – in playful, cheerful and unexpected arrangements. We visited them at their studio in the Hackney district of London.

‘Our installation focuses on a busy, creative, young family. We have actually created a space for ourselves, for both of us and our two daughters. We want to show how a space can function equally well for parents and kids alike – for living, playing or working.’
The light-hearted approach taken by Raw-Edges in their use of materials, colours and products is a defining feature of the scene in the VitraHaus – and of their work in general. Upon earning their degrees from the Royal College of Art in 2007, Yael and Shay jointly founded a design studio, creating a place for their creativity to take flight. They develop furniture, installations and products, always placing an emphasis on childlike wonder and playfulness. Colours, patterns and movement are essential elements in the DNA of Raw-Edges. Visitors to the VitraHaus are encouraged to explore the setting with wide-eyed curiosity, making it possible to discover something new every time. The installation by Raw-Edges is located on the fourth level of the VitraHaus on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein.
