Antony Limited Edition 2025

Jean Prouvé, 1954

The French designer and engineer Jean Prouvé created the Antony chair for the Cité Universitaire in Antony near Paris in the early 1950s. Ateliérs Jean Prouvé commenced production of this design after winning the competition to furnish 150 rooms in what was then the largest student residence in Europe. The robust chair, with its unique silhouette soon found its way into offices, waiting areas and living rooms.

The Antony's striking metal support frame bears a structural resemblance to the Compas Direction table: a transverse tubular brace stabilises the legs, while two sheet metal brackets cradle the elegantly curvilinear plywood seat shell. The seat shell of the special limited edition model is made of European pine, which is known for its distinctive grain. A protective wax surface treatment emphasises the unique pattern. The metal structure is powder-coated in the original Prouvé colour: Rouge Corsaire.

Antony is one of Jean Prouvé's last furniture designs – and it was the first chair to be included in the Vitra Design Museum Collection. It therefore occupies a unique position in this collection, which today comprises of more than 7000 furniture designs. The vintage model was acquired by Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman Emeritus of Vitra, during a visit to Paris in 1984 and further kindled his interest in Prouvé's oeuvre. In the ensuing years, a trusting relationship and collaboration was established with Jean Prouvé's family and Vitra has been producing a selection of his furniture designs since 2000. Highlights from the Vitra Design Museum's growing collection of historical Prouvé furniture pieces were presented to a wider audience in 2006 in the museum's exhibition 'Jean Prouvé: The Poetics of the Technical Object'.

The limited edition of Antony is available until the end of December 2025 and comes with a consecutively numbered label.
