Vitra at the imm cologne

15th – 21st January, 2018

At the imm 2018 in Cologne, Vitra presents generous settings that include the Soft Modular Sofa by Jasper Morrison and Antonio Citterio’s Grand Sofà, as well as the growing portfolio of the Vitra Accessories Collection.

The year 2018 marks a special anniversary: 50 years ago, the Panton Chair was first presented at IMM Cologne. To celebrate the occasion, two special editions of this chair will be released this year, the Panton Chrome and the Panton Glow.

Panton Chair Chrome Edition 2018
Design: Verner Panton, 1999

The dazzling mirrored effect of Panton Chrome is the result of a metallisation process, in which metal particles are embedded in multiple layers of lacquer. This complex coating system is resilient enough to cope with the slight movement of the Panton Classic’s cantilever construction when in use, while being sufficiently robust to protect the sensitive surface.

Panton Chair Glow Edition 2018
Design: Verner Panton, 1999

In an elaborate process, five layers of a varnish containing phosphorescent pigments are carefully applied by hand to the raw polyurethane shell of the Panton Classic and sealed with a high-gloss protective coating. The luminous pigments absorb daylight and emit a bluish glow in the dark.

Softshell Side Chair
Design: Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, 2017

The Softshell Side Chair, whose gentle contours are defined by its soft upholstery, offers exceptionally comfortable seating and compact dimensions: vertical ribs concealed in the upper part of the backrest provide flexibility and considerable freedom of movement. The similar appearance of the Softshell Side Chair and Softshell Chair makes them perfectly suited for combining around the same table.

Grand Sofà
Design: Antonio Citterio, 2017

Grand Sofà is Antonio Citterio’s interpretation of luxurious comfort and contemporary design. The designer’s Italian flair for lightness and elegance is united with the trademark quality and precision of the Swiss company Vitra. The sofa is available in a curated selection of fabrics, which come in a wide range of colours. Together with the diverse elements, variable backrests, selection of cushions, and different base finishes, this opens up a multitude of possibilities for individual seating arrangements.

Prouvé Standard SR
Design: Jean Prouvé, 1934 / 1950

The SR (siège rembourré) version of the Standard Chair has an upholstered seat and backrest. The design of Standard SR illustrates the distribution of weight loads in a manner that typifies the work of Prouvé: while slender steel tubing is used for the front legs, which bear a relatively light load, the chair’s back legs are made of voluminous hollow sections. The slim padding on the seat and back is carefully integrated into the construction of Standard SR, enhancing the chair’s comfort. The fabric cover is available in numerous colours.

The Original

Vitra will also be present outside the Fair, at the Museum of Applied Art (MAKK) together with German-based design website Stylepark. Here, an exhibition around the theme of "The Original" illustrates the development and history of the Vitra classics and contemporary products.
