Mittweida Municipal Library

Constructed in 1860 as an inn, the building later acquired a concert hall and ballroom and was further extended in 1900 to become a hotel. Soon thereafter, the ballroom began to be used for film screenings and was ultimately converted into a cinema. Following its final function as a bar and discotheque, the building stood empty, which prompted the town of Mittweida to transform it into a municipal library.

An architectural competition organised for the conversion project was won by the architectural firm 'Raum und Bau'. The winning project preserved the character of the building while giving it a new identity with an eye-catching roof, which serves to illuminate the library. The Soft Work sofa, Visiona Stools and Bistro Tables from Vitra were used to furnish the city's new social venue, in keeping with the high quality of the building and its refined interior concept.
