Fibreglass is a very robust and durable fibre composite made of polyester resin and glass fibres. The glass fibres visible in the plastic lend it a lively surface texture with a lustrous reflection and pleasant tactile qualities.

When manufacturing fibreglass for its chair shells, Vitra uses materials from Central Europe to avoid long transport distances. At the end of the product’s lifecycle, Vitra’s take-back programme enables the return of shells. If they cannot be repaired, the shells are recycled and used as a substitute for sand as a raw material in the production of cement. This consequently has a positive effect on the latter’s CO2 balance.
