Torre Numero Due, Nathalie Du Pasquier, 2021
A new work of art on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein
Torre Numero Due is the name of the almost three-metre-high sculpture that has been erected on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein. The object by artist and designer Nathalie Du Pasquier is located next to the Hadid Fire Station and adds another attraction to the architecture and design ensemble on the campus of the Swiss furniture manufacturer.
Torre Numero Due is part of a limited edition created by Nathalie Du Pasquier in 2020 for the BRIC exhibition organised by the Italian ceramic company Mutina. The structure takes its inspirations from bricks - a basic architectural element since time immemorial and a recurring motif in the artist’s work in recent years, including in her paintings.
For the exhibition, Du Pasquier explored brick in its physical and conceptual essence, as an element linked to the earth and to its processing, identifying different types of brick, turning them around, glazing them with bright colours and layering them into large formal sculptures. By revealing the inner construction, the artist creates new perspectives and contrasts between solidity and empty space.
With the addition of Torre Numero Due, Vitra has now expanded the existing ensemble on the Vitra Campus. Measuring almost three metres high, the sculpture is a blend of art, architecture and design, and stands on the Álvaro Siza Promenade in front of one of the concrete walls of the Fire Station by Zaha Hadid.
